What is the SSDI reconsideration process in Rhode Island?

If your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application in Rhode Island has been denied, you are not alone. Many applicants are initially denied, but you still have the right to appeal. The first step in the appeals process is called reconsideration, where a new reviewer will take another look at your case.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. Filing for Reconsideration in Rhode Island

After receiving your denial letter, you must request reconsideration within 60 days. During this stage, your case will be reviewed by someone who was not involved in the original decision.

You will need to submit:

  • A request for reconsideration form (Form SSA-561)
  • Updated medical records that support your disability
  • Any new evidence that was not included in your initial application

2. Medical Reconsideration Review

The new reviewer will:

  • Examine your complete medical history, including any new treatments or diagnoses
  • Review statements from your doctors, therapists, or specialists
  • Consider whether your condition prevents you from performing past work or any other work

3. Work and Financial Information

You may also need to update your:

  • Work history report to show changes since your initial filing
  • Income records if your employment status has changed
  • Benefit information (such as workers’ compensation or unemployment)

4. Outcomes of the Reconsideration Process

After reviewing your case, the SSA may:

  • Approve your claim, granting SSDI benefits
  • Deny your claim again, in which case you can move forward to the next appeal step: a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)

5. Rhode Island SSDI Reconsideration Timelines

In Rhode Island, reconsideration decisions typically take a few months, depending on the complexity of your case and how quickly new medical evidence is provided.
